The God of Stinky Situations

John 11:39-‬41 AMPC
39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, But Lord, by this time he [is decaying and] throws off an offensive odor, for he has been dead four days! 40 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 41 Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you and promise you that if you would believe and rely on Me, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

The scripture above is one of the most popular encouraging passages in the bible in my opinion because it gives hope to those who see no light at the end of the tunnel.  It also speaks to those who may have  done all they could to fix a situation.  However, no matter what the details are, we must ask ourselves what do we do when we are facing death and hopelessness in the face as Jesus did for us. Thanks be to God we don’t have to conquer death because Jesus already did but all we have to do is believe.  Life comes from within not from the outside or environment around us.

When we recognize that life is on the inside and we control what life is for us, we won’t continue living life on an emotional roller coaster.

I believe Jesus is more disturbed at us when we don’t trust him than when we smoke a cigarette, tell a lie, or do the wrong thing.  Don’t get me wrong Holy is who God is but it is not by works that we are saved but by grace. Our level of trust shows our level of relationship with God. I think Jesus wept in this passage because He cared about Lazerus so much but He was so disappointed that His very own doubted him after He has revealed himself over and over again.

Your situition may be like Mary and Martha’s but don’t let it diminish who God is to you.  Life may get a little stinky sometimes but you must believe that you serve a God that specializes in stinky situations.  You may be embarrassed and even frustrated by the smell of your marriage, the behavior of your children, the actions of your supervisor, and the state of  your finances, but know there is hope and you can live again. Stand on the promise of God that if you believe God will bring glory out of this.  I challenge you to roll the stone of doubt away and watch your Lazerus live!
